hi... i think i might have a problem. do you think you could help? :( anon

hey guys, I am extremely upset right now because I have always struggled with my weight but then I finally got it down after about 2 years. But I got a little crazy with it and lost about 45 lbs. I used to be 115 but now I am close to 70lbs. I was diagnosed with anorexia just today and if i don't gain a least 7 lbs in the next 2 weeks I will be hospitalized!

this really is a horrible time for me because we just started winter training for crew and that is one of the reasons I even lost weight. I have been so dedicated and done everything I could do to be the best coxie but now I can't do crew until i am at a stable weight. But I know I won't be able to do it and now I might not ever be able to do crew.

Crew has been my life for the last 3 years I can't imagine life with out it. This is just a reminder to all coxies who are trying to lose weight - don't do it if you know it isn't healthy ... do u want to end up like me, maybe never being able to do crew and people constantly on your back?

Guys, I need your help and any advice or words of wisdom would be great because I could really use your help. Thanks

Hey, I'm so sorry. One of my best friends was hospitalized with anorexia last year and I know how tough it can be. It seems like you have the worst part over with (hopefully) since you are talking about it. Don't worry about crew. Your coach won't care how much you weigh and and he/she will probably be completely understanding and supportive and keep a place for you on the team whenever you might be able to come back. Good luck!

Hey there- I'm really sorry to hear about your problem, that's gotta be pretty tough. All I'd say is still be as dedicated to your crew as you were, but just don't the the workouts with them. Instead motivate them, or just be there taking their times down or anything else you can do to help. But definately get that weight up unless you want to be seperated from your crew and not be able to see them at all. Good luck with this :) All us coxies are here for ya

Just be brave and get better, crew will be there when you are ready even if its as a spectator or a fan. Just keep your chin up and for once take care of yourself, your team will thank you for it!

hey i really admire that you can admit you have a problem. I think a lot of coxies dont know whats happeneing to them, its something we all struggle with in a weight related sport, myself included. I know how addictive weight loss can be, i got sent to the doctor too.

However, even more than that i admire the fact that you can tell other coxies to be healthy. I think that shows something really strong in you, and im sure that you will try your hardest to break the disease.

lots of luck and courage to you

HI,

I am a Coach. I think that anything under 115 is too light. In college when you make it to a big race they will sand bag you for being too light. That would be the only thing worse than being too heavy: is for a crew to be used to their light coxswain and have to race with extra weight in the boat because their coxswain was too light. If you want to loose weight for your boat, do it gradually so that when you get to the bigger races at the end of the year, they have a lighter coxswain than in March.

Hi, I read your post and felt I had to write, I hope it helps in some small way so here goes...... I'm sure you know that anorexia is more complicated than just the whole 'need to loose weight' thing - thats just the manifestation of, probably, a number of different issues. The good news is - it won't always be like this, but right now, I think you need to focus on YOU and spend the energy working on those issues in your life - you'll need as much energy for that as you currently give to your rowing if you want to truely get well - and I'm sure your family, friends, crew, coaches would agree. If you're passionate about something there's no reason why it won't remain a part of your life, but keep it in perspective - the most important thing in your life is actually you and your health. One of the hardest things too is to actually 'step out' of yourself and see yourself from another view point which you really need to do right now for the whole 'healing thing'and the other thing is to learn to like yourself, complete with flaws and know that you're fine as you are! Good luck with it and let us know how you get on, you've probably gained a whole load of support through this website so draw on it and get yourself back on track very soon.Take care.

I would like to thank you for having the courage to post your situation here so that others can learn from it. And for having the courage to see that you can draw strength from others to help you get through this. I hope that the comments posted here by other coxies will help.

I am sure that right now things seem very overwhelming and life altering. I think that you should try to concentrate on getting better and finding out the triggers that put you on this path. Your health and well-being are the most important thing.

Rowing and coxing can always be there for you once you have returned to a healthy weight and a healthy outlook. Try not to look on what you will be missing (maybe a season or two) but on what you will be gaining - a healthy body which will be able to support you for a long life. Let's put this in perspective: People can row and cox into their 80's. Without a healthy body, you could not participate for any length of time, so you will really be gaining 60+ years of quality fun. If that is in rowing, great. If it is just living and working and doing some other sport or activity, also great. - unless it is dragon boating, cause that would be silly... ;-)

Seriously, please keep in touch. Either by posting here or email me in private at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - I would really like to know how you are doing and provide any help that I can.

Stay well.

Hey guys its me. THanks to all who have resonded so positvely you all have helped alot. I am now seeing a physcologist twice a week and a nutritionist once a week. Its a lot to handle. I talked to my crew coach and he and my whole crew team are supporting me everyone is being really great. I just really wish I wouldn't of even gotten my self into this and to just think it started with just a simple diet. Now to all those diet obsessed coxswains I hope you know what your doing and if you need any help get it right away you will be happy in the long run. If any one ever wants to talk post your email and I will write and give any advice I can. I know this sounds kinda weird espically since I am the one with the problem but soemtimes just by talking about it can really help so feel free. Well thanks again for the support

stay healthy!

I am really happy that people are learning from my own experience but the only thing that hurts is that people say i am a strong person because I obviously aren't a strong enough person because I let this happen to me! But I am trying to stay strong!! Guess what everyone I gained 1/2 a pound! I know not much but hopefully its comeing slowly!

I think you are a still a strong person. It takes a lot of strength to talk about something like this and it takes a lot of strength to get over something like this. Some people haven't been strong enough to do it and even gaining half a pound when you have anorexia takes a lot of strength. Congratulations.

You must be an amazingly couragous person. You certainly have my respect. thank you though, because I have come close over the past year, and although its great that I have a flatter stomach than all my school mates, it gat scary when a boy who I'm not that close to got me alone one day and said "are you okay? you're looking so thin and pale. You want to come to lunch with me?" (just for a record - extremely good looking!) He then proceeded to buy me lunch and make sure i ate it. I then realised that eating was important, and since then I have continued to keep my weight down, but my eating healthier than I ever did in my life, instead of starving myself!

I'm glad to hear you've got everyone around you supporting you. Post back & let us know how you get on yeah?

I just thought you should know, I too, have suffered with eating disorders since before I was a coxswain, going on 9 years now. If you need to talk about anything I am here.

Realizing, I'm not logged in, lol, I'm Coxbox and you can reach me by IM at "mako chan4" or "senselssactofbam" or yet, again, "vfirefly86". You can e-mail me at any of those either. (it's aol)

I don't have time to write too much and I really want to further talk to you, but I'm in school, and late for class, so I should probably hurry this up.

Just know, I know exactly what you are going through, what you will go through, and how it all happened. I've been there, done that, and have been back again.

It's really tough. I should know. 9 years, still not better, but trying.... really hard. I know if I don't suceed in recovery soon, or weight gain, I'm not only going to be removed from the crew team, but won't live much longer either...

Sigh...

Give me an e-mail or Im. which ever. I'm always on..!! :-D

Cheer up!

heres a little smthn for ppl to think about- lotsa coxns are heavier than 115 (by any amount) and would love to be that light! however some ppl still feel thats too heavy for themselves to be a coxn.

thanks for the reality check- i just started dieting and im going to know not to get carried away now. think of all the ppl who have died of anorexia- is that worth the price of being a good coxn?

annorexia is a psychological problem, not a physical problem. humans by nature dont know limits- either eat too much or not enough... this applies ot many other things.

just so you know nothing is wrong with you if you are annorexic- if you are alive to tell the story its not too late to start again.
