I am a coxwain for a varsity womens team at my university. I was also coxy last year for the same crew. I have always demonstrated confidence and firmness during a race as well as practice.

My problem is with a crew I must cox this weekend. I was emailed and asked to cox an Alumni 8+ for a head race this weekend. Some of these men are 50+ but pull like the men on our varsity team! Some of them have been on the national team and one of them in particular was a coach for a national team. I know they will win regardless of what I say because they've won before with ease but I want to make a good impression since this is a great opportunity for me.

I am really nervous about this race...I'm nervous about my calls and how I will plan the race. I was wondering if anyone has any head race plans that can help me for this type of situation. Thanks in advance!

That really is a great opportunity. Just stay confident in an call you make-with a stern voice.

For Head races I like to time it and every min. I pick something different for the boat to focus on such as: leg drive, ratio, handle heights, body positon, quick catch, body swing together, hands out of bow together, timing, strong finish, release together, etc... I just change it up every min. try to let them know where they are in the piece, time and meters. remember 1k is usually around 4mins or less

Good luck!
