*Okay- here's my deal- I leave for a rowing camp on friday where I will be coxing W8+s and right now I'm freaking out about the details and I'm looking for any advice I can get! Thank you guys sooo much!* 1. I've only got real experience coxing guys, and after one month of coxing the varisty girls four (long story) I know that it's completely different (mentally and then there's the whole girls like to be catty and fight and complain allll the time aspect)- so, does any one who has coxed both guys and girls, or just girls, have any advice? 2. Aside from a few random races sprinkled through-out this last season where we combined our top 2 4+s into a borrowed 8+shell, I have no real experiece coxing 8+s. Any advice on coxing 8+s, or on transitioning from coxing 4+s to coxing 8+s? 3. I hate to admit this, but I'm extremly intimidated by the head coach of the camp I'm going to. Obviously I'm being ridiculous and shouldn't be thinking about it, and luckily I'm still psyched, and I know that it only means that this will be an even bigger learning experience (gosh, that sounds like something my mom would say....) but does anyone have advoce on dealing with coaches/officials/etc. who intimidate you? THANKS SOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

Coxing 8's is a bit different than 4's, especially if it is a bow loaded 4, but the main differences I have found is that an 8 tends to be more stable so people can row a little sloppier and get away with it. But you are in the stern so you can see the blade work and get on them about it. Other the only big difference I notice is the size of the boat, you have to remember the boat is a lot longer so you can't get as close to shores, other boats, etc as you might be able to in a 4.

As far as coxing women. Well I have never coxed guys, so I can't really say what the differences are, but I know there are some. Like at my boathouse the guy coxswains tend to be a little harsher and brutal. You still have be slightly mean and what not with the women, but its a different sort of mean, you can't call a boat full of women a bunch of pussies, but I have known guy coxswains to do that. Sorry I can't provide more insight.

1. i've coxed both girls and guys. i coxed the girls 4x for couple practices but nothing serious. i mainly cox boys though. anyways, the big difference i notice with guys and girls is that you have to be careful on what u say for girls. there's a limit or line you can't pass. on the other hand, from my exp., guys really dont have a "line" u can't pass. most of the guys are not as sensetative on what the coxswain says - they all know that i really dont mean it, but it's a job. but the key tihng is, i always apologize to all my rowers if i feel like i said to much. and we're all really close / great friends. however, with girls.......they wouldn't even let u apologize or make it up, they'll just totally shut u out. so i guess you have to know their limits, each rower is different - so you should get to know your rowers really well and make sure you know the limit. and don't pass the line. they get a little fisty.

2. basically what DrillSeargant said.

3. relax. and remember the number one thing to remember is to RELATE with the coach. when i say RELATE, i mean as in talk to him on his level in a way. my coach and i are really close, maybe it's b/c he's young and im 18, and our ages are much closer than the others. but, be really mature in your conversation. doesn't mean u have to use big vocab. just don't say things you would w/ ur friends. ask him serious questions abt coxing and stuff, to show that u want to learn. but after you've washed the boats and in the boathouse, have a casual conversation like: where did u row (college)? talk abt movies, news events that are interesting.....stuff like that.

well i hope i was a help. and good luck to you.

as for intimidation, remember that you're the boss, they are your boys or girls and no one elses, they can go ***** themselves if they disagree, think it long enough one day you'll believe it

you might as well cut off the redder on the 8 because it does nohing at all compared to the 4s...you will find you have to start turning twice as far in advance than in a four.

well i have coxed both girls and guys boats equallty for 3 years now. i know a few basic things. girls that i have coxed during a piece, tell me what they liked and didnt like . like if i coxed a girls boat like i did for the guys they would first tell me that i needed to stp yelling and that all i needed to do was tell them everything very calmly and sternley.then they would tell me never to say this and that again but say this too or insted. girls boats listen more to you then the guys do. But if i cox a guys boat like i cox girls, they telkl me that i need to be "meaner" i dont know if thats the right word but that i have to yell and get them rialled up. girls boats will comunicate with you a lot about what they like and dont like ( if they like you)

you have to make a good first impression with both crews. dont be ify know what your doing and the crew will respect you. you dont have to be all business other wise they will think that you are stuck up.

what i have descovered about the tequnique between the two is that the guys pull HARDER. this does not mean that girls slack off. they are physically not as strong. it's a noticeable difference. girls tend to have the tequnique down. it's eaiser to find something teqnically wrong with a guys boat than a girls boat.

as for 4+'s and 8+'s well i find that coxing a 8 is eaiser and i dont find that people slack off because it's more stable. i find that they tend to do better beacuse there are more people to impress. but in 4+'s they get nervous (if it is thier first time in that boat) cuse they are so responsable for the boat. and then everyone does diffrent things and it all goes . i cant say that coxing girls or guys is eaiser but they are definetley different. but you get used to it
