My crew ( university senior women ) is having slight balance problems at the moment, and i was wondering whether anyone had any good ideas to try to sort this out, any calls i can make to really get them thinking, and get it sorted out, as its frustrating them and its hard to move on whilst balance is still off ! Anyone any novel ideas in general for rowing exercises as i want to make the outings a little more fun especially when we don't have a coach during some training sessions. Last year we had rowing with a packet of sweets on the head to try to maintain good posture ! Thanks :) Tania

I often find with my crews that the balance is off because the finish timing isn't together or that they aren't getting the hands away / body over together. So we do lot's of pause drills and use calls to focus on getting the weight onto the toes early, follow the one in front, watch outside arms of person in front etc. Getting the crew videoed also helped my girls as they can see the differing angles.

Or the other culprit is leaning / shifting body weights so I call to think about sitting in the midddle of the boat.

I'm afraid this isn't as good as rowing with sweets on your head :), but I really like closed eyes, its good for getting everyone to move together, and prevents people constantly "blade watching" which can really muck up your balance. I have male crews, so I also get them to do that when there'e any fit girls on the bank! You could do the same with fit blokes... evil, but fun.

I think the idea of having the body very very still on the recovery is important. one of my rowers says he imagings trying to suck his belly button through his spine on the way foward as a way of maintaining an upright posture. I also like to emphasise that all body movement should be done off the back. Drills like extra slow slide (under 10 strokes/min if they're a good crew) and pausing at varoius postions on the recovery are good for this. Also sitting at the finish tapping the baldes three times and then going to hands away while keeping the boat perfectly balanced is very effective at getting the hands together of the back.

As a (particularly evil) variation on single stroke rowing, my friend suggested the three-stroke exercise. You take 3 strokes (full slide, feathered) to get the boat moving, then all pause at 3/4 slide, blades fully square. It apparently sorts balance out amazingly quickly, but I've not yet dared to do it...

A good fun one that your stroke will love is Follow the Leader - basically it's up to your stroke to pause (or not) at any point in the stroke where the blades are out - be it at backstops, the catch, half-slide or whatever he/she likes - and the rest of the crew have to try and follow suit. It really helps bring a crew together and gets them moving up the slide together, as well as being a lot of fun!

For sorting the balance, I'd suggest telling them to focus on controlling the finish (tapping down to the same height), keeping the hands flat on the recovery and not diving down into their footwells at the catch. These are the causes of about 80% of balance problems in my experience. Single stroke rowing pausing at hands away and then quarter slide (when the balance has improved slightly) also help, though only really if the crew know what to do but are simply having difficulties gelling as a crew.
