I was wondering, do you other coxies find that the relationship between the cox and coach is very different from that between the rowers and coach? I find that being the only coxswain in my club, my coach and I talk with each other quite a bit. I wonder how different it would be if I was only a rower....

I dont know how to describe it but its just a differnt kind of relationship. Your coach has to trust you with the crew and the boat so there is just something about the relationship. They also rely on you alot, so the tend to favor you. It would be different if you were a rower yes but I dont think that you would notice it. From my perspective anyway!!

my coach and I have always had a close relationship...which is why when my last advisor left and I had to pick a new one I picked him. This year I also have him as a teacher...which makes for alot of time spent with him....my rowers always tease that he thinks of me as his daughter or little sister, but I've noticed after working with different programs and coaches that whenever a coxswain has a closer relationship with his/her coach then the rowers have more respect for the coxswain, so I think it works out well for everyone.

The other two coxes on my team and myself have an interesting relationship with our coach. He's a great guy, but he was a rower and has no idea about coxing. Novice season meant learning everything yourself with no assistance. He always acts shy around us since we're "the girls" on the team, but we've learned to appreciate all he can teach the guys.

this summer i had three male coaches all at the same time. i was the least experienced coxie and the youngest one. i was one of the two female coxes and the other girl, lisa, was really really good. i had three very different relationships with my three coaches. timmy had coached my highschool crew in the spring and i was his favourite and he was my favourite. he once told me that i was like a younger sister to him. he was the older brother i never had and he was my hero this summer, saving me from all kinds of unpleasant situations. brett was the head coach for my highschool program and is also a guidance counsellor at my school. he was like the father of the crew... always there if you need to talk, the peacemaker, taking care of everyone. the last coach was my least favourite. dan and i had a very interesting relationship. he favoured the only male coxie for the jr men and was very hard on us girls. every chance he got he would find something to scream at you about and criticise you on. one of the biggest highlights of my summer was when he told me that i had done really well and that i had a lot of potential.

so yes, there was a point to all of that. you can have all kinds of relationships with your coaches and you shouldn't worry about whether or not they're different from those your coach has with your rowers. you should focus on trying to make your relationship with your coach as good as possible, it will make things simpler and happier for every one. i miss you timmy, you're the greatest "big brother" a girl could hope for. brett, i'm really looking forward to winter training and this spring, i can't wait to see who lasts. dan, thank you for teaching me a couple of very valuable lessons this summer and thank you especially for showing me what it really means to earn respect.
