This is my first season as a coxswain and not a rower and I've mainly been coxing the lightweight men, the novice men and the men's varsity 8. One thing that I've noticed with the guys is that when they get tired during the races, they rush their slides like no other. I'm getting really frustrated because my stroke can't overcome all the weight that is being thrown at his back, and these guys are all awesome rowers who would be doing so much better if there weren't so much check. No matter what I say to them, (power it through the drive, slow the slide, watch your ratio, stop throwing your weight at [stroke's name] back, focus 10 on slow slide, etc) nothing seems to help. We try to work on it when we're in the tanks but I'm running out of ideas on how to get them to stop rushing. Is there anyone who can help??

It is my first season as a cox and not a rower as well. like you,my rowers go slide crazy when they are tired, but i've been coxing mainly novice girls. I've done all the same things you've done to try to stop these problems but it still isn't working well. Im in the same situation so I too would like some ideas! The one thing I've heard from my (former) coach was to give them graphic images. Make them picture the slide moving up the tracks in fractions of inches. Tell them to literally resist their slide with the same muscles they use to drive. Have them think about their slide moving because the boat is gliding out from under them, not that the slide even MOVES on the recovery. And overall, have them think about not pulling their slide back with their toes in the recovery.
Those images were aimed at girls, they may need to be slightly changed for coxing guys.

| Submitted by Anonymous Coward on 2002-11-08 13:24:54 | Comment: My boys also have rushing issues....my bowman in particular, and his rushing was killing the rest of the boat....we finally attatched small bungi-cords (spelling? sorry) to their seats for just one practice so they'd really have to feel the control, and then the next few days we just left the bungi on bow's seat...after that, whenever there'd be any rushing in the boat, if I so much as mentioned a bunigcord they'd get the control back right away. Hope that helps, your boys won't like it while it's actually attatched to their seat, but after it finally comes off (a few practices), they should really apreciate the control it will help them get.

I got really frusturated at one point and was asking any one and everyone for sugguestions. the best one came from a rower who went to nationals last year as a lt wieight and is now our varsity cox. She said USE VOICE RYTHYM to space out the words slow it down over three strokes. woks like this

if you say it really slow (a change from your normal normal rythym) it will get thier attention but you hjave to match this with the push to make sure they get the ratio. If they really dont get it say "that wasn't good enough lets do it again in two...) good luck

- slide up to the catch with loose grip ("piano keys")
- flat legs on body swing
- bring your knees up to your chest (not your chest to your knees)
- think "pulling the boat *toward* you".....

| Submitted by Anonymous Coward on 2002-11-15 14:38:29 | Comment: im actually a rower, but one thing my coach did to eliminate the slide rushing problem was actually on the erg. he propped up the end of the erg 4 inches and made us do a 20 minute set at a rate of about 18-20. we had to control ourselves with our legs and really focus on our form. this also serves as a good threat, since not many people like to erg in the first place, and erging up hill is a pain in the butt. i hope this helps.

| Submitted by jessgwynne (-) on 2003-03-09 18:02:28 | Comment: I'm a rower/cox/coach and I've found that in everything, the best way to stop the rush is to do a whole lot of feet out rowing. This way the rowers can't pull themselves up the boat with the feet and have to control there legs to come up the slide. It can be frustrating at first but a lot of fun when it becomes second nature. Try and do some power rowing (a bit difficult, some might throw themseleves way back in the boat) so that they don't start rushing as soon as they put thier feet back in.
