Yesterday i was at Emerson Cup, and it was a disaster! Not only were the officials (who weren't even real officials) rude, the dock master impatient, and too many crews there, but the coxswains upset me the most.
I was in 4 races, and somthing went wrong in 2 of them. First of all, 6 lanes was too many, boats were running into each other right and left. Now, that course could have been fine with 6 lanes, but some of the coxies there were incapable. I'm not trying to put blame on anyone, but seriously, it was such a joke! A coxswains #1 priority is steering, and it is to keep straight and keep everyone on the water safe.
Did i miss it in the coxswain's meeting when they said it was OK to go into someone else's lane, cut a boat off, hit someone in another boat with an oar and keep going? Because that all happened!
I know how to steer, and have lots of coxing experience. Don't just become a coxn because you are small. You have to have skill, and work hard at it. You either have it or you don't. And soooo many coxn's there didn't have it.
just think about it, and try making sure you steer straight and be a good cox.

I think it's a written rule that officials have to be rude. What else would USRowing certify them for.
While this isn't true for all regattas if you're behind a couple lengths the officials won't care what lane you're in (as long as you don't obstruct the course)
If you go into another lane and hit a boat I'd expect you to be disqualified.
It's also easy to look at less experienced coxens and blame them for everything. I know we had one on my team who loved to yell at the novice coxes, don't do it. It's not necessarily a case of you have it or you don't, there are some naturals, and there are some who must learn.

Hey I was there! Yeah, one of our boats got completely cut off so the coxie had to steer around another boat because the boat was pointed at the middle of our boat. I think the point of Emerson's is to be a fun race to finish off the season. Their rule is generally no breakage, no DQ's. I had a lot of fun anyway. First winning boat I've ever been in in 2 seasons (one rowing, one coxing). Being thrown in was awesome!
