“It’s cold, you couldn’t possible want to go out there. Who’s in the team?” Asks the unaware parent.


“It’s winter yes I know but I’m warm, I have layers! It’s the guys 4, bowloader, which means I’m up the very front, lying down, sooo the movement of water keeps me warm too…”


“Have you always been part of this team?”


“Crewwwww. No I haven’t, I’m filling in for the other cox. Look, the point is, this winter is the winter that people are going to get fit, and they need me to help them!”

There are six crews at the club on the water this winter. Three scullers, a coxless pair, a double and a men’s coxed four. Try sharing that between the coxes. These guys are the ones I have the opportunity to learn most from, and I need to. So, it’s the last session before their big race, I couldn’t miss it for the world.

The doctors, however, thought otherwise. The day before my much prepared and anticipated session, I injured myself. Severely. I was sent from doctor to doctor to doctor.

“Surgery should take place this week to repair it. I hope you didn’t have any plans.”


“Um, actually…” I quickly glanced at a glaring mother, “this thing, I have tomorrow morning, um, coxing.” The doctor sighs. He thinks I am ignorant, he doesn’t understand.


“Rowing? If this gets wet, especially with dirty water as such, the consequences could be worse than missed training. I’m sorry,” He gets up, thinking I have enough sense in me to get the gist. Little does he know most senses have been consumed and clouded over by rowing, my life revolves around it.
