I have found the secret to pulling through other crews.... the simple call that will end up owning the world... I own the key to all that is gold... And now for your entertainment I shall share this as if it were the meaning of life... *FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY* When sitting cox - cox in a race situation, you simply call with a very confident demanding tone "all right Gents! on the next we are commiting 5% pressure on the finish! are you ready? NOW" now here is the key... When the rowers add the extra 5% you shout with their pressure "CHAAA". This magically helps them with: a) rhythm b) timing c) aggressive pressure d) if you draw out you "CHAAA" sound then it helps them hold on to it at the finish. I don't know if it is just my crews that respond so well to this, but give it a try and let me know... Its never failed for me... Enjoy yourselves! ~ gothcox

You're lucky GothCox for having a crew that wouldn't die laughing.

I used to row in a double with a girl that used to shout that and it made me laugh so much every time but she kept doing it, in the end i used to steer us into the bank to make her shut up!
But hey Gothcox, if it works for you keep doing it!
You can be Pepsi and we can be Coke (or vice versa)

Also, I am king of the death stare.. If someone in my crew were to laugh at me, I would make them feel so pitiful it would hurt..
hehehe

This a.m., I heard the chaa call from behind...it was the Boston University JV crew team. We were at a very low rate steady state (15spm) ..."I don't want to subject you to the Chaaa, let us race them and put it behind us." The chaa avoidance call worked very well. My masters boat (average age for boat is +45) destroyed the youth JV squad.
So, at the end of the day...the Chaaa call worked very well for me. The BU JV squad...not so much...their coach is probably still yelling...

I coxed the Head of the CT last weekend. My masters were in need of a little boost, a little extra at the finish..."God damn you, you have the (curse) catch and the length...but where is the finish?"
"No...I can't pull out the Chaa...but perhaps, perhaps...I can replace it with the word SEND and play with the intonation and delivery."
Not only did they respond, but we ate through 4 crews, caught two at the finish and took second to Palm Beach Rowing.
Brilliant...Thanks Goth

And even if there was one, "Chaaa" would be far from it. The "chaa" call, as Goth pointed out, is used to remind the crew about acceleration from the catch to the finish and yes can be delivered in a manner which makes the crew push harder (usually replace the "C" with a harsher letter like "J" or "Z"). But this call will not make you pull through another crew simply by yelling it til you lose your voice. You must first understand what this call means and your crew must also know what it means, as with any call you make. Always know why you are doing something. And always let your crew know why, if they don't know what "chaa" means they'll just keep rowing along and it won't do anything but confuse them and they'll think you've gone mad.
As I'm sure some of you have read in other posts, there are crews which don't like "chaa". As with any call, what works with one crew might not work with another. If you do nothing else, do what your crew likes. If your crew wants you to sing opera during the race, thats what you do. If they want you to shut up and just steer, do it. If they like "chaa", use it (as long as they understand it).
I have used "chaa" with many different crews, most seem to respond positively. It has worked for me with colligiate boats and senior/elite crews. The masters boat i coxed in high school loved it, but my boat of juniors wasn't a big fan of it. I have also used it with womens crews, high school didnt like it, one boat of masters didnt like it, the other did, and senior/elite women i've coxed seemed to have liked it. Now, I hardly ever use it with inexperienced crews (which the ones that didn't like it were), simply becasue they don't quite understand it and aren't used to it.
I feel GothCox's statement of "I have found the secret to pulling through other crews.... the simple call that will end up owning the world... I own the key to all that is gold" might mislead some coxswains out there. There is not one simple call, but rather a collection of many many different calls (sometimes thought of during the race) which a good coxswain uses to make the boats row well and go fast. If you want to be a good coxswain become very familiar with the rowing stroke, listen to the coach when they are talking to the rowers, and talk to other coxswains. Listen to what they say. From there you can use that knowledge to build your own calls and you can modify ones from other sources.
Coxing is very dynamic. What works in one situation might not work in another. You need a whole arsenal of calls and techical knowledge which you weave together ON THE SPOT during the race. So keep building up your knowledge, don't stop when you find the "Golden Call" becasue it does not exist. There is no one golden call, but rather hundreds of potential ones. It's up to you to choose the right one at the right moment.

You will look absolutely ridiculous to your rowers and to others if you do this and they are not prepared. Personally, I hate it. I'd prefer saying other things at the finish.....

I had heard about different catchy phrases that were used to help their team... one of which was chick chick BOOM... the chicks were for the recovery and teh catch... the boom for the drive... well i decided to try this out for a practice race against our b boat at practice one day... i todl my girls about it b4 trying and when i put it into affect... it worked at first. Now beign a new cox at the time... i said that for EVERY stroke until the words got messed up and i started to say things like click tick broom... anyway... now my boat used that as a code name for a power 10... when we are cox to cox i call a chick chick boom in 2... and walk away from our competitor
