Hey Guys, As you have probably guessed by now, i am new to this website but i do wish to contibute my profound knowledge to the rest of this wonderful community. First let me start off by telling everyone a little bit about myself.... I am a male, i cox my schools 1st VIII. I have a really awesome crew (we beat St. Benedicts College) btw. for those of you who dont know, they won the youth VIII's at HOTC. Anyway, back to the article. In my recent finds, i have narrowed my opposition's weakness down to one major fact... the cox does not wear sunglasses. This may sound extremely arb but at the start line of a big rehatta's 2k race, i find that by looking into the eyes of another cox, you can tell that they are scared and full of emotion, for example, during a race, i turned up my cox box and called a power 10 for the scared coxie in the other boat, nevertheless we got 3 seats more just from the ten. The other great fact about wearing sunglasses is that it can give you as a cox a certain style and uniqueness, i find that looking good in a race motivates my crew as they have a strong character in control, it also aids in the head games. In finishing off, you don't have to take my advice for anything i've said here, i just find personally it really helps with coxing. ~ gothcox

Personally, I think that sunglasses provide the ultimate pokerface, both benifical to your rowers and detramental to the other teams all in one glance. I've accumulated an extensive collection of sunglasses and goggles, and while I have one specific pair dedicated to racing (they're only ever out at races, but they're there, every race-they scream "game time" to my boys, the one time they were left behind my stroke was far more upset than I) I'm continually using different pairs at practice, I try to match them to the flavor of the days workout.
My boys love my oldschool leather aviator goggles (paired with a scarf in the fall, Snoopy Style), and on days when I'm in a bowloader, I've been spotted wearing goggles. My personal favorites include an Arnold Swartzenager inspired pair that make the boys quake as we launch because they know that they mean they're really infor it.
From Oakleys to your kidsister's pink swimming-goggles "The Eyes Have It"....I'd reccomend heading to

Oh yeah, ive been meaning to ask foreign coxies summin, what do coxes wear in the Us or Uk during races, I ask this because here in south Africa we have to wear tri-suits (uni-suits) and being a cox, i dont exactly fill the thing to well.
My whole crew knows my open hate for the thing so I decided to find out what coxies there wear so I can maybe convince ROWSA (Rowing South Africa) to change the rules for coxes on racing

I cox for a junior men's varsity 8+ in the Northwest and it's almost always damn cold when we race (unless it's Regional Championships in May in the sun or at USRowing Youth Inivite in June in Ohio where I hear it's like standing in a blowdryer.) Decisions on what we wear can come from many different sources. Alot of it depends on the coxswain's prefrence. A lot of the guy coxes I know (I'm a girl) prefer to race in just unis. I would love to race in just a uni, but I get so cold that I can't talk I'm shaking so bad by the time we get to the dock. It also depends on the coach's rules. Some coaches make coxswains wear only uniform clothing but some coaches allow their coxes to wear whatever keeps them warm and functioning. Most coaches would rather have tow pounds heavier working coxes than light frozen coxes.
I personally try to wear as much uniform clothing as possible. Or if we don't have something uniform, I find whatever it is (for example rain bibs) in our team colors, so at least it looks uniform.
In college, I think the NCAA has rules about what can and cannot be worn in a boat. I think the enforecement of those rules varies on conditions and how nice the referee is feeling that day.
Good luck!
Never forget to fight.

1) I'm from Ireland and there IS NO SUN!!
2) I can use the opposition's use of them to my own advantage by telling my crew that the only reason my opposite number wears glasses is because they're trying to hide the fear in their eyes while I wear none because there is no fear in mine...
If anyone trys this approach let me know how they get on.
As for clothing... well no sun equals lots of rain so we generally waterproof ourselves around here. Lots of longsleeve T-Shirts don't go amiss either.

) on 2003-01-15 12:40:14 | Comment: Well, for me personally, wearing glasses gives me the edge, cause you as a cox would have to guess if im scared (which i generally am not), whereas if i were to look at you, i could immediately tell what you were thinking and when.
I have worked out many a oppositions race strategy just by looking at my opponents eyes going through each 500m.
Ah, one last question completely off the topic, are there any other coxies here going to Greece for the junior worlds, If so please let me know cause Im going with the Junior South African VIII and i want to know if any1 else here is going.
Oh yeah and to the owners of www.coxie.com I intend to record a few races in the next couple of months, what id like to know is what format you want the recording in ie. mp3, wav etc...
ps. I LOVE THE IRISH ACCENT!!!!!!!!!!!!
breathe the pressure, come play my game and ill test ya..........

Well done on the international front! You seem to have a good crew from what you say and your challenge to the world at the end says you've got attitude as well.
I remain unconvinced about the glasses thing plus the aura of mistique that you portray to your crew could also be hiding the fire in your eyes that could be used to inspire your stroke to lift it when needed. Then again in a bowloader there's probably only a plus side to it as your crew can't see you (unless something is drastically wrong!).
I hope when the sound files are up I'll understand your accent as my experience of South-African accents is probably the same as yours is of Irish i.e. via the medium of Hollywood. (Its a pet rant of most Irish people about the 'Oirish accents' in American and British tv and films).
Will be following your progress in the worlds.
Oh and as challenges go:
Maybe its a game to you but I Am The Game... and no you can't play me!

oh and btw. the last comment is actually lyrics from a song by Prodigy called Breathe, i make my crew listen to it before every race, its our song.
I myself enjoy Opeth before every race (I couldnt force my rowers to listen to that)

I'm a Taff (Welsh for all those non - Brits) and our accent rules too! I love it when Kathy coaches us, her soft Belfast accent is luvely! *Oarsomegirl*
