Okay, well i have been coxswaining since my freshmen year in high school and have given up alot for this sport. But recently this past summer i had to quit summer rowing for the last regatta...Canadian Henley. I did this because my job told me that i would have to make a choice and i have been taking off work the whole summer and was only working up to 18 hours a week while everyone else worked up to 30 hours a week. Yes we are supposed to be only part time but in the summer they like to give us more hours during the day so that we can earn more.

I have also quit colorguard, soccer, tennis, and dance for rowing but i guess that isn't enough. My coach told me that he doesn't think that i'm dedicated enough to this sport and that i should start taking it more seriously. I don't know how much more serious i could take it. I row spring, summer, some fall, and go to as many winter practices that i can.

I'm not goin' to quit my job because then i can't row but i don't know what else i can give up. i already gave up all the things i love just for this one sport that i love. i have also had to dump many boyfriends because of this committment and i know that it's just high school love but at the time it hurt.

i don't know what to do and i'm afraid my coach is gonna handicap me by not putting me in boats this up coming spring because of this....could some one give me a little help here cause i'm at my wits end!!!

Wow, he sound's like a harsh coach !!

I reckon you should try talking to him about how committed you are to coxing and all the stuff you have given up to fit it in, also tell him how much time work is going to take up and how flexible they can be as to when you work. You should come to an agreement on what day's you will come down to cox so you can fit work round it and he can get other coxies down when you are not available. It might work out that you don't come down to land training and only come for the water work cause that's what you can fit in.

Good luck

I have been pondering your situation. Perhaps in trying to take on too much, you have seemed a bit scattered or have had to reshuffle things at the last minute, which then looks disorganized. I think you should let the coach know the times that you are available, that when you are there, you will be 100% focused on the task at hand, and that outside those times, you must focus on other things - work, school, etc. By committing to the times that you are available, you are being true to your own needs as well as bringing your best and most organized self to the crew.

If that doesn't work, find yourself a masters crew - they will accept any schedule you put forward, and will be damn grateful for any and all of your efforts. You will still get water time, hone your skills with some very knowledgable rowers and generally get lots of medals, and you can return triumphantly to your jackass coach and show him what he missed. :-)
