Your rowers probably want you to go to practice because you are part of the team. Make a compromise with them, say you will attend every monday, wednesday, and friday, or any other two or three days a week that you can. While there make yourself useful. Record times, cheer on your rowers and help them with things you cant help them with on teh water like form and other things that you cant see form your coxie seat. Of you have nothing else to do, get on an erg and do a workout with them. They are wprking their butts off, so you might as well show that your juts as committed as them. HAve some fun and get pumped for the spring season.

Tell them to F-off..pardon my language. That is ridiculous. If you show up at all they should love you. Winter is the stupidest season. (yea stupidest isnt a word ahah) I really dont think that coxies should be there unless they want to be there. I didnt start till we went on the water last year and my crew was fine. I go to some practices when they are pulling their ergs and what not. There is no other need for me. But my lil brother is also a coxie and he goes every practice cause once he "grows" (like he will) he wants to row. PPL like that should be the only ones that have to go. I really wouldnt worry about it. if you are overweight, then yea you should be there losing a few pounds. But other then that, go once a week or when they are pulling ergs for real or whenever you feel like it. It is not your job to be there!! Good Luck!! =)

What do you mean you don't want to go to practice? I am a coxswain for an ACC school, and in college, babe, you go to every single practice. By working out with the rowers you gain respect, by watching them erg, you help them with their technique, and by seeing them push their limits you learn more about each individual man in your boat. My coach requires that coxswians be at practice. So yes, I do wake up every morning for 6 a.m. practice, sometimes walking in the snow and rain to get there, but I am becoming a great coxswain. If you want your rowers to respect you and put you in the first boat, then why are you not showing them that you are deserving of their esteem? You chose to be a coxswain, so be one.

first of all u must understand that these aren't required practices.....and i'm the only one gettin' yelled at....they aren't yellin' at the rowers who don't show up...just the coxies...don't u think that it is more important for them to come and secondly i am the first coxie my coach puts me in the best boats and my rowers do respect me and i respect them thirdly to get to my boat club i have to pay a $1.25 to cross the bridge and then a 15 minute drive to the boat club.....hows that...oh yeah and i do go to practice and work out with them...i do the wieghts and the tanks and the ergs...i also compete in all the erg races and guess what i don't even get to touch an oar on the water...hows that for u...i don't mean to sound b*tchy or anything

How are rowers going to respect a coxswain who isn't there for them during the worst part of the season? My rowers want me at practice and I want to be there; all the coxswains on my team work out with rowers on occaision and if nothing else your presence builds camraderie and makes you more effective in the boat. Require of yourself the same discipline and dedication that you require of your rowers and see where that takes you in the spring.

I am a rower and although I am sure many coxies feel they have nothing to do over the winter, rowers really do appreciate your presence during the long cold months of the year. A few words of encouragement during a long hard erg piece-just the knowledge that someone else believes you can complete the piece is often enough to renew your dedication to carry on, a reminder about technique, seeing the coxies working out themselves, or just being there to call and time are all things that coxies can do instead of "just standing around." When it comes down to it every coxswain is a part of the crew. I've seen lots of crew bonding take place through the hardships of winter training. If you miss all winter you also miss the chance to bond with your rowers, and it goes both ways-if you come to winter practice your rowers also get to know you better.

i take times i lift weights i erg i run i go i the tanks too....but most of the time my coaches don't let us do it and they don't like us callin' things and the ergs have timers on them so all i do is sit there and then take times...so yeah i do work

Its probably best to show your rowers you understand, and be part of the team, not jsut condescending and stand around waiting for them. They'll love you for it; its worth it!

Yeah you should be there, but if some of the rowers arent showing up, punish the team by doing 100 jumpees for every unexcused absence that day. Do it with the rowers, but slowly teammates will check other teammates and everybody will hopefully come, or give u an excuse.

theres a reason youre a coxn- and it sometimes isnt just your height and weight. it might be that well working out aint your thing. if the rowers dont cox then why should you be forced to row?
