The only thing I like about mixed boats is that I can see the improvements being made immediately. It's a pure benefit that the lower boat guys are really scared of me and will jump out of the boat if I told them to (providing of course that I sound really mad and threaten them a little, also them being scared of all the 6'3" 190 pounders helps.). When I tell the guys that just came out of novice to make an adjustment they do it right away, they don't have to hear it five times worded differently each time. It's really rewarding and worth putting up with bad set every once and a while. (I can't count how many times I had to remind them of the set today.) I love seeing the kids I coached this summer doing so great. They (well maybe just the girls that came back, the boys were really pansies) all say hi every time they see me even when their coach is talking, and almost decapitate me when they carry the oars (wait, that was a new novie boy never mind.) The workout went pretty well today. Steering was a lot better but just because the other coxn was Penguin who's trained with us for a year and picks up on things really quickly. It's a lot of fun because when she cuts me off I know that if I keep going straight she will move because she scared of hitting me and when she gets close to me she tries to move away quickly which makes her boat easier to walk through. She also tries really hard and the guys took notice today. I think that the absence makes the heart grow fonder applies to these guys whenever they don't have a coxn that has been with our team a lot before. Anyways Ed said that on Monday we start rowing a Varsityish boat and a JVish boat which I am looking forward to.And now for the embarrassing moment of the week. As we docked today and walked it down my stroke, Abe, was complaining about stepping in the water so I jumped out to get his shoes. As I ran past the middle four I called the whole boat up and out. My two seat, (not a varsity candidate) didn't pay attention to the fact that I was running by his oar when he got out. Somehow I stepped on the oar as I ran past and at the same time he moved it which made me fall flat on my a** in front of everyone and not to mention almost spraining my ankle. (I've done that once already at the boathouse from falling 4 feet off the wall and getting tangled in the door chain but we won't tell that whole story.) Hope you all have a good weekend. Mine will be spent at the gym on the treadmill, ankle withstanding hopefully, thinking about crew, attending another losing football game for my high school and sleeping, alot. Never forget to fight. ~YogiB
